When creating a trailer, the titles are paramount in explaining to the audience both the production company and the distribution company as well as reviews, credits and most importantly the title of the film itself. Without the use of titles within a trailer, the target audience of the trailer wouldn't know the name of the film, what the reviews of the film are, who is involved in the film and when the film is released. Titles are used within trailers such as "Emelie" below to entice the target audience into watching the film because in effect, the more individuals that watch the film, the more profit in which the involved institutions make. Finally, analysing where the titles are placed within a trailer as well as analysing the types of titles involved within a trailer, we as a group will be able to create a trailer that doesn't just coincide with the title positions but justify pour groups research and planning into creating the trailer itself.
The trailer in which we as a group will be analysing in terms of the titles is Emelie. Emelie is a new, 2016 official release horror film which plays on a common nightmare for parents - children being in a dangerous position. Emelie is about a babysitter who, when looking after children while their parents go for dinner, plays awful games with the children as well as abusing the children both physically by hitting the children but mentally by playing psychological games also. This therefore creates a trailer that contains suspense as well as thrill, the titles create texture to the trailer and add reason in which to watch the film upon its release date. When creating our horror trailer, we will want to create a similar effect upon the audience in terms of adding ambience towards the trailers moving images.
The first evidence of titles within the trailer, Emelie, is shown only 6 seconds into the trailer itself. The series of titles consists of six individual "logos" or institution names. "Tribeca Film Festival" is a film festival situated within New York, "Deauville Festival Du Cinema Americain" is situated in Normandy, the" FEFFS" festival is situated in Strasbourg, "Bifan 2015" is situated in Korea," L'etrange Festival" is situated in Paris and finally "Film4 Frightfest" is situated in London. From the opening six seconds, we as an audience already get the impression that the film has been praised from global locations giving us as an audience the feeling of whats to come, a film of high quality with international backing. With prestige coming globally, it allows for the trailer to gather sophisticated support that know the relevant festivals and in addition to this, these opening titles show importance with their different sizes and fonts as well as structure. To be successful, we as a group may need to research relevant film festivals or create our own for the purpose of the trailer to allow for a kind of "proof" of the quality of the film and trailer to come.
"Ultramedia" is an entertainment company based in London in the UK as well as Santa Monica in California, USA. This therefore suggests that the company is global which coincides with the purpose of a distribution company, to distribute a form of media across multiple but global media platforms in order to achieve success for the form of media as well creating the highest profit margin possible from the media form. The title design itself is effective within "Emelie" because the two arrows turning clockwise suggest an infinite movement in which would be associated with distributions, the infinite loop between the media form and its final destination. The "Ultramedia" title appears upon the screen on its own as if to attract the target audience watching the trailer but to also suggest that this is the only distribution company in relation to the film, unlike the series of titles shown in combination at the beginning of the trailer. We as a group believe that it is going to be important to produce a distribution company sequence that not only stands out to the target audience but allows for the representation of a global company that will distribute our eventual trailer out to all media platforms to reach the target audience and to increase interest in what would be the subsequent film.
The next title within the trailer for "Emelie" is shown over half way through at 1 minute and 12 seconds but it isn't a title that is related to the direct production or distribution of the trailer or film but it is a review taken from "The Hollywood Reporter". This therefore suggests that the trailer and subsequent film in question has a good global recognition of the film therefore suggesting that it would be recommended over other horror films of similar sub-genres. This is the first of three review quotes shown as titles within the trailer of "Emelie".
The second of three review quotes shown within the trailer of "Emelie" is placed 1 minute and 25 seconds into the trailer and so the target audience has already seen the bulk of the trailer and what to expect from the subsequent film. The penultimate review quote is produced by "Shock Till You Drop" which is a horror review site therefore suggesting the "Emelie" is a trailer that attracts attention from more than one media platform, this is an element that should be looked into by our group.
The final of three review quotes that is shown as a title within "Emelie" is produced by "Final Reel" which is another well known film review site once more adding prestige to the trailer and subsequent film that will be distributed by "Ultramedia" the distribution company. In terms of producing a trailer for our poltergeist themed genre, we as a group believe that it will be beneficial for the trailer to include reviews from media platforms that add prestige and bulk to why the trailer and potential film would be worth watching. Furthermore, it is important that the chosen quotes don't spoil the media form for the chosen target audience but entice them into wanting to watch the film when it is released, therefore implementing the purpose for a successful trailer.
Arguably, the most important title within the trailer created for the film "Emelie", the actual title of the film is what the target audience will remember when looking for the release of this film across media platforms such as DVD and on the big screen. Without an effective title design for the name of the subsequent film, the chosen target audience will not be enticed by the moving image and therefore may not remember it enough for when the release date is reached. We as a group like the idea of having a simple font for our poltergeist themed horror trailer in accordance with a simple background to bring the intensity of the film down once more allowing for the audience to be enticed into wanting to watch the film. However, as a group we would be open to other forms of font and title design to reflect the intense and psychotic vibe that follows a poltergeist themed film such as the original poltergeist. It is for this latter reason that once our moving image content is in place, that we as a group create a film title that reflects the way in which we want it to reflect upon the audience, this impression will most likely arrive to the group during filming.
The final title shown within the trailer for "Emelie" is the credits and in terms of timescale it is shown on the screen right at the end of the trailer to end the moving image. The top half of the image seen at this point within the trailer represents the main involvements within the trailer for "Emelie" such as the production team and designing team. The lower half of the title upon the screen at this time represents for media logos with one being the main distributor "Ultramedia". "Uncorked" is a creative agency and "Sandbar" is a media institution while "Sixsales" is a entertainment and sales agency. This therefore suggests that all four of these companies have aided in the distribution of "Emelie" but because "Ultramedia" got its own title and screen time within the trailer, it must be the most significant. The credits part of this title is paramount for inclusion for our group because it is included within all trailers, the group will therefore discuss the chance of including smaller scale distribution and production companies that could have aided the creation of our poltergeist themed trailer.
In conclusion, it is viral that when creating a trailer, the titles will take importance in explaining to the audience both the production and distribution companies associated within our trailer but the credits and possible reviews that are also linked into the subsequent film. If there was a lack of titles within such a trailer as ours, the trailer wouldn't entice the target audience into wanting to watch the film upon its release date because they will know nothing about the film itself, not even its title. "Emelie" uses titles to great effect because it allows for the chosen target audience to get a sense of what occurs within the film and what institutions think of the film without spoiling the subsequent film for the target audience. The larger the curiosity in which they can create around the film, the more people will go to see the subsequent film within the trailer which in effects allows for a larger profit to enter the institution. When creating our trailer, the positives will be taken into account as elements in which we can look at and use to benefit our final trailer but we as a group will also look at the negatives to allow for us to know what not to do when creating out poltergeist themed trailer.
