Metacritic is a website found online that has the purpose of rating all forms of media out of 100, the website takes movies, music videos and TV shows amongst other forms of interactive media and gives each one a rating, the higher the rating of the media form, the better it is therefore promoting it into the public eye as something worth purchasing and investing in. Metacritic gathers information from across the globe looking at reviews and star ratings, the website takes the weight and amount of detail and depth in each review to have an overall but realistic score for the media form. In terms of star ratings, these are out of five with five stars being the ultimate goal. The way in which Metacritic goes about its information gathering, it results in a somewhat database of reviews that calculate a statistically correct score for the media form.
When looking at the film genre of Horror, Metacritic combines all sub-genres to produce one horror list rather than separating up the genres to create smaller lists, in theory you would find the most recent films to be released outside of the top ten because they are new releases and one bad review can plummet you down the list whereas a film which has had time to impact its audience may be higher up in the list because they may still have one bad review but a review that is majorly outweighed by good reviews with high star rating.

When looking at the ranking order for horror, no one has achieved 100/100, not even mind to late nineties proving that even the movie at the top has had reviews that have not been complimentary. The movie which is top of this list is named, "Werckmeister Harmonies", this particular film was released in 2000 and is a film in which is based upon life in Soviet Hungary, filmed with only 39 languidly paced shots. The film itself is a drama based film but is included within this list because of the plot in which it holds.
Second on the Metacritic list of horror films is Son Of Saul, this particular film represents horror without jump-scares but with realism and real-life horror in the sense of the Holocaust. Rated 91/100 on the Metacritic horror list, this film shows a sub-genre of horror that isn't often explored in as much realism, psychological horror. This may be positive because it means that there is a gap within the market for this horror sub-genre but on the other hand it may become a negative because it is a niche horror genre combining psychological and realism therefore attracting a minimal audience.
Third on the Metacritic list of horror films is the re-release of Repulsion, the clip that follows shows a twisted take on a a serial killer possessed by sensual fantasies. A blonde and innocent looking female becomes obsessed with killing in the horror film repulsion, filmed in black and white the film is traditional in look but modern for the era in which it was released. Metacritic has given this film a rating of 91/100 therefore probing that this film is worth the watch.
Looking at the films on the Metacritic list of horror films, it is clear to see that there is a lack of gore and visually pleasing images that strike the audience into fear. The trailers and clips above show a gap in the market for slasher style horror films, not one true slasher is near the top of the list in regards to the Metacritic list and therefore leaves a gap for a new horror sequence that breaks this mould.
