Diegetic Sound: Sound that characters in the film world can hear. Sound that happens at the time of recording.
Non-Diegetic Sound: Sound that characters in the film world cannot hear. Sound that is added in in post production.
To decide on the balance of diegetic and non-diegetic sound that we should use in our trailer, we have researched other horror movie trailers to see how many of each are used in each trailer. Our research has shown that on average we should aim to be using 30 of diegetic sound and 18 of non-diegetic sound. Our research has come from horror trailer such as Clown, Get Out and Ouija.

Our research has shown that on average we should aim to be using 30 of diegetic sound and 18 of non-diegetic sound. Our research has come from horror trailer such as Clown, Get Out and Ouija.
Ouija
Ouija is a 2014 American supernatural horror film directed by Stiles White. The film is about teenagers who have unleashed spirits from a ouija board. It was released in October 2014 by Universal Studios and was a commercial success receiving $103.6 million worldwide. When watching the trailer, 39 counts of diegetic sound and 22 counts of non-diegetic sound were recorded.
Clown
In the film Clown, released in 2014, is a Canadian-American 3D supernatural horror film directed by Jon Watts. The plot is about a loving father who becomes a savage killer while wearing a cursed clown costume that won't come off. There are 15 diegetic sounds and 27 non-diegetic sounds in the trailer.
Get Out
Get Out is an upcoming 2017 American horror film directed and written by Jordan Peele. It is scheduled to be released in February 2017 by Universal Pictures. The film is about a couple that have fallen in love and are travelling to meet her upper class parents. There is a theme of racial issues in the film as the male is black and feels uncomfortable and anxious being around his girlfriend's parents. He then learns that the parents have a sinister history of young black men disappearing. Chris tries to follow advice to escape but finds it easier said than done. This intense trailer had 59 diegetic sounds and 26 non-diegetic sounds.
Emelie
Another trailer we looked at was Emelie. It tells the story of a young boy who tries to protect his two siblings when their new babysitter starts to reveal her psychotic nature. The film was released in April 2015 and had 41 counts of diegetic sound and 15 non-diegetic sounds in its trailer.
After looking at these trailers, we were able to grasp an idea of how many diegetic and non-diegetic sounds we should use in our own trailer. We took an average from the trailers we watched, which resulted in 30 diegetic sounds and 18 non-diegetic sounds. Overall, horror trailers have more diegetic sound, such as speech. There are generally less counts of non-diegetic, which means we need to focus on including more dialogue and not as much sound outside of the film world. However, saying this, we do need to consider how we are going to incorporate non-diegetic sound into our trailer in post-production. We need to have enough to be around 18 and also include about 30 counts of diegetic sound. If we can include the right amount of each type of sound, our trailer will match the average sound content of the other horror trailers we have researched.
