When creating a horror trailer, it is important that we comply with existing substances such as shot number and the average shot length within our trailer. As a result, we have taken six horror trailers into account as well as the overall average horror trailer length and the average shot number per trailer. When we as a group create our trailer, we need to take notes about the shot count numbers, as well as trailer lengths into account to ensure that they are as realistic as possible. Below this, there are six trailers will also allow us as a group to learn how to structure and put together the titles for the our very own trailer.
When creating a horror trailer, it is important that as a group we comply with existing examples in terms of elements such as the number of titles present within the trailer.
There is a general structure to most trailers when deciding on where titles belong within film tailers, the traditional method of titles are as follows
When creating a horror trailer, it is important that as a group we comply with existing examples in terms of elements such as the number of titles present within the trailer.
There is a general structure to most trailers when deciding on where titles belong within film tailers, the traditional method of titles are as follows
- The distribution company- This often appears first because the distribution company themselves are in charge of getting the film recognition and world wide fame and so if they do a good job they want to be credited with making the film a success therefore they put themselves, or make who ever is in charge, put them first in the opening of the trailer.
- The production company- This is often right after, or at the same time depending on the director, the distribution company because the production company are the ones who allowed the whole film to start, they gave funding and they gave their help in order to allow a film to be produced, and so they deserve to get a lot of credit for that and so their position is justified.
- Three titles regarding a vague story- Then there are three collections of titles that are all interlinked with each other, this is placed with in the trailer for two main reasons, one it is too allow the audience to gain better knowledge about the backstory in the plot of the movie itself. Another reason is to allow tension to be built into the audience, if the audience are given worrying and nerve wrecking, their imagination will create a worst case scenario and therefore, make themselves afraid.
- The Title- The title appears towards the end of the credits, this is simply because the audience need to know what they are going to view and so the title needs to be one of the most memorable title pages in the trailer itself. The audience will also gain an advanced knowledge about the film, making them intrigued about the content within the film.
- Additional information- The details of the film will be displayed on the very final screen of the trailer, this is too allow the audience to first off, find out any more information about the film, like behind the scenes footage and/or premiere times and this will also be displayed at the end of the trailer because they want the public to interact with the film staff and build a stable and good relationship with the target audience.
The Grudge (2004)
The grudge is a well known and highly rated horror film, about the ghost of a previous family who died in the home, a new family then moves in and the movie follows the events that happened to them. This trailer follows the structure of most horror films as it confirms with the order of titles. This is because this order is an established and well known way of ensuring the audience gets the information that the production team allows them to know. The addition of having an extra clip of footage at the end is used to frighten and intense the fear of the audience.
Hostel (2005)
This particular trailer goes against the traditional structure of the titles, the first difference is purely the amount of titles within the trailer itself, in grudge there were 5 titles altogether (with 3 of them being linked to the plot) in comparison Hostel has approximately 23 which is a big difference. However it follows the structure in the sense of all the other titles within the film trailer itself are mainly about the plot and so it is used to entice the audience to the film. One thing that i noticed in the trailer is as the tiles got more violent and evil the tempo increased, this is used to create tension and fear, allowing the audience to be inside the mind of the victims.
Saw 3D (2010)
This trailer is also going against the traditional view of titles in trailers. The trailer itself is more targeting and sending information about the how the audience are going to to feel. Most of the titles, for example 'Will you survive' and 'Witness the final cut', will be directed to the audience, trying to make them feel trapped and unnerved when they haven't even learned about much context of the film. They have used the element of surprise in the sense of scaring them without necessarily scaring them with content, therefore the titles have to play a massive part of creating that tension and the feeling of being trapped, this is why the structure within this trailer is different to the confirmation of the traditional trailer of movies.
